Would You Dance With Me?

When I ask you for your hand,

There’s no wish to undermine.

To force, take charge or second-guess,

To impose upon your time.

My wish is that we dance together,

Hand in hand, togetherly free,

Toing, froing, weaving, flowing.

Would you dance with me?

When I am alone

I wake and jump out of bed.

Or lie and ponder or meditate,

Or sit up and read or rhyme.

Whatever it is that moves me,

With that and those around me,

I dance it in perfect time.

When you’re here, you’re not around me,

You are not one of those those.

When here, you are with me.

As I am here with you.

I do not wish to dance around you,

Would you dance with me?

When I’m alone and risen,

I might shower then exercise,

Or exercise then shower.

I might make a flask of coffee,

Walk to the park, sit on a bench,

Drink the coffee and smoke a pipe.

Looking up at the trees and the tower cranes,

The birds and the aeroplanes,

Smelling of the sweat of a sultry summer sleep,

For not having showered.

There is no need for choreography

When it’s just me.

Alone I flow, effortlessly,

Revelling in life’s beautiful ballet.

Would you dance this ballet with me?

When I am alone

I eat when hunger calls,

Or in anticipation of a fast,

Imposed by hours on public transport,

Or the dearth of purveyors of decent repast.

When alone I take the time and care,

To prepare fabulous feasts.

Or scoff down a roughly-cut sandwich,

As per my caprice.

I know not of your whims,

Your desire, your hunger,

Your urge to fast,

Your lust to indulge.

Would you dance with me on the way to the kitchen,

On the way to the shops and in front of the stove?

Would you dance with me with knives and skillets,

Dancing together the food that we love?

When I am alone,

I spend so much time having fun and in play.

When I proffer my hand that you may join me,

It truly is just may.

There is no want nor expectation

Other than that you do as your will.

Whether your fancy is word-play, dice or fooling around,

Board games, banter or puerility,

None of the above or time alone,

Would you dance with me?

When I ask you for your hand,

There’s no wish to undermine.

To force, take charge or second-guess,

To impose upon your time.

My wish is that we dance together,

Hand in hand, togetherly free,

Toing, froing, weaving, flowing.

Would you dance with me?
